In 1983, Anne Lockhart combined her love of riding horses (she has was won championships in cutting, reining, team penning and barrel racing) and desire to help children as one of the cofounders of Ben Johnson's Pro Celebrity Rodeos. They hold events in 4 U.S. cities every year, and have raised over 5 million dollars so far to support various charities. The Annual Roundup for Autism started in 1990. It is an annual event held in Dallas that offers a PRCA & Celebrity Rodeo, golf tournament, ball, silent and live auction, casinos, and live music. The Roundup supports the Autistic Treatment Center of Texas, which began in June 1976, and has centers in Dallas and San Antonio. Their mission is to provide quality education and treatment for individuals who are developmentally disabled. Their philosophy remains to provide individuals with the right to achieve their maximum potential - socially, academically, and vocationally - in an environment best suited for the individual.
Roundup for Autism's founder Bobby Norris said that Autism has seen an increase in diagnosis of over 300% in the past couple of years and is now more common than Down Syndrome. The treatment centers, which are known as the best in the country, are needed now more than ever to help develop a level of independence for people affected by Autism. Bobby also knows first hand the devastating effects Autism has on families. He has a daughter who is afflicted with Autism. The Dean Smith Celebrity Rodeo in Abilene raises money to help support the John Wayne Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society Cowboy Crusade, and Cancer Services Network, Inc. Anne's family is also actively involved in these charities. Her daughter Carly and son Zane compete, as well as her brother-in-law Cooper Taylor and father-in-law Buck Taylor. Carly and Zane are very competitive. Carly was the 2002 Roundup for Autism 2002 Cutting Champion, and Zane won the Roundup For Autism's Team Branding championship in 2001 and 2002.
