So the problem arises that the old BSG technology which is supposed to be futuristic is actually less technologically advanced than our current modern day tech. How does a writer manage to stay true to canon, yet relent to the sci-fi tendency to create gadgets and gimmicks? |

Unless one's story is tech-heavy, we rely on the people and characters to carry things along. I find that the BSGniverse is easy to "update" as it were, since most of the eps dealt less with technology than with the characters, or the situations. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Well, admittedly your techy genius stands out, Senmutian One.
Still, I think that there's sometimes a tendency to update to reflect American military standards. I suppose I'm not just thinking about technology, but also decorum, etc. I get a little antsy about these supposed people star systems away mimicking the US so closely. The obvious comeback is it's an American show. However, it's sci-fi first for me.
I think I'm rambling. Does that make any sense?
No? Have a scotch.
Now?

Well, the new one was meant to hold America and American ideals up to scorn, hence the similarities. As to the REAL BSG, the similarities are thanks to it being an American show. Blame Larson. The Colonial-speak helps soften this.
Antsy? Why? Too much ambr...uh, Scotch? _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Not enough.
Antsy because even though they purposely tie in the thirteenth tribe and Earth, it's difficult to believe their ideals, standards, etc would be so similar to our own.
I admit, I always liked the way their military decorum was so much more relaxed. Is it that need to "update" BSG that has the VS whipping the boys and girls into shape with discipline?
Enquiring minds want to know. |

Well, after the Holocaust, discipline was relaxed somewhat, probably out of necessity. All these new recruits with no military familiarity, and such. Now, with time behind them, a stiffening of the regs is certainly in order, and I see the VS as just being realistic in this area. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Or maybe decorum was just more relaxed in the Colonial Nation. |

Unless you got Cronus for a CO.
I guess I disagree. If the mileau was British, would you feel similarly???

Oh, pip pip!
Well, I'm guessing if it was British, it wouldn't mimic the American military. |

Lef-ten-ant Starbuck, instead of Loo-ten-ant Starbuck? Hmm . . . that might be weird too.
Maybe something altogether different that didn't mimic Earth military at all. Colonial Warrior designated classes? |

Just wondering how one could depart from the familiar in a ranking system.
Merely musing. |

Well, what we saw in BSG, while certainly different from our own, was still sufficiently similar to be understood by the audience. Larson has a talent for that. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Do you think it's necessary to insert some familiarity in a show to make the audience comfortable with it? |
