Starbuck talked about how thousands of children were found wandering in the Thorn Forests of Caprica. Did you ever wonder how so many children became separated from their parents? I mean, I assume that a few adults were out there too, but why all these kids?

Any thoughts?

It would depend on the time of day the attack occured. Was it during school-centars, when parents might be at home or work, and the kids in school? Perhaps the business/industrial part of town was concentrated on, with the residential considered of lesser importance. Since it was a farm community, perhaps the attack concentrated on the food-production areas, and thus got alot of the adults out in the fields/processing plants/whatever. Such would have been seen by the Cylons as more valuable to the Human war effort than a school building or a residential street. Either way, alot of the kids would probably have made it to the various shelters first, assuming the Colonials go by the old women and children first addage, then the Cylons got there before all the adults could make it. Perhaps the shelters were in the Thorn Forest itself, knowing the the Cylons were unlikey to bother bombing a forest.
Many possible scenarios.

I always had the idea that Starbuck was really young when it happened. Just a toddler. Young enough to not remember much except images and sounds, but old enough to run.

A kid that old would have probably been at home. I think Maggie wrote a bit where his mother had fled into the Thorn Forest with him, and was executed by a Cylon. Which would certainly explain Starbuck being there, but not the others.

You'd think a shelter would be sealed somehow, or hidden. Maybe underground where a strafing run couldn't get it. So why would those kids end up wandering lost in a Forest? Sounded almost like fairy tale material.

If a Cylon laser blast/bomb his a shelter hatch dead on, itmight have been blown open. Lots of casualies, but alot might have survived, who were deeper down in the bunkers. Once Home Defence detected them, the Cylon attack force would not have survived long.

Maybe a large group children were brought to safety by only a handful of adults (while the rest stayed behind to defend their homes), they were then discovered by the Cylons, the adults stood up and fight as a final line of defence and after they were killed the children scattered in the woods, trying to escape.

I have to admit, I can't think of a scenario where you would have had Cylons landing on the planet. I always got the impression that ANY kind of attack on the Colonies in the past like Umbra was strictly an aerial bombardment.

The Cylon equivalent of a Commando Raid. Sort of a Cylon Dieppe. The troops involved know they are not going home, something the Cylons don't care about anyway, but it also gives them the chance to gather field intel, on the response time of defenses, and how much difficulty the final invasion force will have dealing with the bulk of the civillian population, eventually.
Makes sense to me.

I guess. If I were writing it though, I'd stick to an air assault only.

Yes, me too. I was merely thinking that MAD's scenario would not be outside of standard Cylon practice, as we know it.

Not completely true. On Lost Planets of the Gods we see air raids in combination with troops also attacking on the ground (the ones that killed Serina)

But on Kobol, there were no other defences or personnel. Lucifer believed that this would be the very last assault, and so acted accordingly.
