Of course. Look at the original Trek. Thanksgiving and Xmas are mentioned, as well some tech that doesn't look too far out. If the audience feels they can grasp it, they will feel comfy, yes. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Do audiences still want to be comfy in this day and age? Has it changed, do you think? |

People today may have vastly more information at their fingertips, but basically Human nature hasn't changed. Unfamiliar surroundings, objects, or technologies, whether in reality or on the tube, creates discomfort, even if only unconcioussly. Imagine showing someone from 1908 computers, nuclear power, and freeways full of cars. Uncomfy! _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Yet most of us like to peek over the edge of comfort once in a while, to consider the unknown, the intimidating or the horrifying. Especially, if we know we're watching safely from a distance.
Thus the thriller was born. |

Exactly. From a distance, safely. If the show/movie/whatever has "comfy" reference points, things that the audience can identify with, then you can stretch things a bit. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

And the very same comfy reference points usually make you care about the character enough that when the alien pops through the middle of their abdomen, it's even more horrifying! |

Exactly. Thus, in BSG, we CARE about Cassie or SB or Apollo or whomever. When Serina dies, we CARE about how he feels, and how he will now have to relate to Boxey. We care about how Adama feels finding Ila dead and Zac too. We care about SB's feelings, re Aurora, even though he should exercise better judgemet at times.
Good call. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Yet, in something like the Matrix, just Neo being Human gives us enough of a point of reference to have us care about the character, even though everything else is so far removed from reality.
Or is it? Bwahahahahahahahahaha!! |

I'm late to the thread but to answer the original question, I think Galactica only looks obsolete in terms of the computer screens and the size of the terminals. The other principal elements of technology which is weaponry and propulsion is still sufficiently far ahead for the obsolete element to not matter much with me (and given how I'm generally not into the tech elements anyway, it's even less of an instinctive problem). |

I suspect most viewers will be in your camp, EP. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger
