Some of the sports stadiums that opened in the 70s like Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium tried to anticipate the Metric Revolution that wasn't by putting the markings on the outfield wall that always denote how far away it is from home plate in both traditional feet and under that the Metric counterpart in Meters. By the mid-80s they had painted over the metric numbers on the wall.

It's really the kind of change you can't sell to a country with as big a population as America over such a wide space. The changes in infrastructure would be astronomical and you also have too many people who could never adjust. Europe by contrast has smaller populations in their countries and smaller spaces of land to have to change the infrastructure (signage etc.) And Canada might be bigger territory wise but it has only one-tenth the population.

In a similar way, you could never do in America what the Swedes did in the late 60s by changing the side of the road the cars drive on (I think they went from left to right, which would be the only time that's ever happened in Sweden!) one New Year's Day and just gave everyone five minutes to stop in the roads and shift over before resuming.

Well, Europe also has a history of people doing what they are told by governments, both tyrannical and "benevolent". And besides, it was invented in Europe, by "enlightened" people from a certain country. AFAIC, they can keep it. It has no place in a country such as ours.

Unless agreed to by the consent of the governed. That remains the American way.

I am going to let that one slide, since as a teacher, i am going to assume you KNOW what fiat means.

"Italian cars! Bloody sarcastic..."

They must know something we still don't! Smile

"Think Metric" in the US was one of those late 70s fads that went the way of the Pet Rock and other forgettable 70s things (of which we don't lump Galactica into!). I can remember how on Saturday mornings, NBC would run a series of short animated spots on the virtues of the Metric System that were basically their counterpart to the popular "Schoolhouse Rock" segments on ABC Saturday morning. There was "Meter Man" (athletic jock), "Litre Man" (annoying goof with big moustache), "Super Celsius" (dark shades) and "Wonder Gram" (a slightly rotund Wonder Woman knockoff). Needless to say, they didn't catch on and the kids weren't humming those songs the way they still do "Conjunction Junction, What's Your Function?"

That's so funny. Well, at least they tried. Very Happy

Too bad you guys don't see the benefits. It's so much easier to divide something by ten than it is to divide it by eight.

But we kind of get our backs up at being told what to do by folks we never met, voted for, or even know who thay are. Besides, our system has worked for longer than metric has existed.
Good enough for me.
