I did think it was sweet that she "hid" the questions so the next group wouldn't use them. They used a camera, and I think MAD tried to get it but couldn't. |

We've had so many quote thread add-ons, I just felt I *had* to think of the slightest excuse for restarting this thread.
Okay, here it is. The only thing not to like about Sheba in Galactica, was the fact that she wasn't around from the very beginning of the series! |

I wonder what she would have thought of Serina? Another strong, confident Galactica woman. |

Sheba would certainly have been one to applaud Serina's desire to become a warrior. And she certainly would have seen to it that a different attitude was employed toward would-be female pilots in the events of LPOTG! |

Heh heh. So you're saying she wouldn't have been at Apollo's bachelor bash if she was a part of the Galactica's crew? Hmm, never really thought of it until now, but I suppose the Galactica's pilots were portrayed as exclusively male up until then. So . . . she would have either opted out of the party, or would have been in the Life Station with the others.
And Sheba was really the only female fighter pilot that they focused on from the Pegasus, as well. A real minority evidently, if it hadn't been for the events of LPOTG. |

Well, I did try to tone down the sexism of LPOTG in my adaptation by having the bash be an exclusive thing for Blue Squadron only, meaning the Fleets wasn't quite as bereft of pilots (after all, all of them shouldn't fit into one Officers Club room) as the aired episode made us think. They still needed the female pilots more to give them a proper safety margin of defense.
But to answer your other point, I think Sheba's feminine side would have made her realize that a "send-off" party as the equivalent of the bachelor stag party we're familiar with in our own culture (not from personal experience in my case!) would not be an appropriate place for her, even if she did at times feel like "one of the boys" from a professional standpoint. That's the difference between Sheba and pretenders to the name of Starbuck. |

An interesting topic unto itself, the sexism of the 70's. Why did you feel the need to tone it down? To make it more palatable to the readers of today? Or because it affronted you? Both? I recall a scene we discussed in the current VS ep between SB and Sheba where you thought it portrayed Sheba negatively, but I thought the sexist point of view of Starbuck was true to character. |

"Sexism" is a matter of personal perception oftimes. A suffragette of the early 20th Century would see the mores of say the 1860's as "sexist", yet see many of the ideals of her own time as "normative". Many today would see those of the early 20th as "sexist", or whatever era did not match their own persoanl ideals. I prefer to take that what each succeeding century/generation/whatever/ has left us, and deal with it on it's own terms. We cannot retroactively change the ways of the past. Let us leave things as they are, rather than remold the characters/mores/ideals to suit whatever is considered "right" as of right now.
BSG is what is is/was. Let's not remold it to make it "modern". _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Nicely stated, Sen. Personally, I was never offended by the BSG portrayal of females. The female characters were strong, intelligent, and believable, with the possible exception of Bree. Yeah, right, a warrior. |

What specifically about Brie puts you off? _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger
