That would not surprise me. Not at all. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

My own view on this subject is basically the C.S. Lewis perspective from the space trilogy he wrote (Out Of The Silent Planet, Perelandra). I believe in the existence of other life, but that the barrier of distance between us and them is ultimately God's way of keeping us from ever making contact with each other. While the science fiction genre is a fascinating way to explore the storytelling ideas that come from interactions of different life form races, I really think in the world we live in, it's never going to be. |

Please elaborate as to why it will never be, IYHO. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

That really has more to do with my religious outlook on how I think the history of mankind will unfold. I just don't see mankind as destined to do that in this realm of existence nor do I see the other species that exist in their distant domain as destined to contact us. |

So, you do not see us eventually developing practical interplanetary/interstellar propulsion at all? _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

I pretty much stated my reasons a year ago, and I think they speak for themself. I don't think we're destined to do that in this plane of existence. Perhaps that kind of discovery/interaction is only for those of us blest to Eternity with the same God who created the other beings of this universe. |

I read your reasons, EP, and while they are succinctly stated, they still leave me with a number of questions. The root source of your doubts are still unclear, and, at least for me, did not speak for themselves. All I really got was "No I don't think we will." The ultimate root reason is left nebulous. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

I guess I haven't posted on this because it's so very subjective. However, with that in mind, I believe that life exists all over the universe, but there's the possibility that we wouldn't recognize it as sentient, or even perceive it at all by our limited means. |

So, do you see us as (officially, anyway) encountering such life in the future, or developing the means of propulsion, or other technologies, to do so? Personally, I think the answer to that is yes, but opinions are welcome. _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

I know you do.
I wonder if there are planets out there teeming with life/civilisation, and their Beings look up at the sky at night and wonder the same thing? One day will space become the ultimate adventure/exploration, much like previously unexplored regions of our planet have. I think so, but perhaps they are also limited by their technology.
We lack the science, but it sure as heck would be amazing if it ever happened. Perhaps, there are less technologically limited Races out there that could bridge the gap. Then again, if there was, would they want anything to do with us cretins? |

Perhaps some races, like ourselves, just want to know that they are not alone, just for the sake of knowing. It may be like some nations/tribes here on Earth, who for centuries wondered if they were the only people on Earth. True, when the answer came it was often unsettling, but one of the worst things any civilization can do is grow stagnant. Technology is driven as much by curiousity as by need. Perhaps for them, it is much the same.
And while I will admit that I unashamedly subscribe to a Judeo-Xtian view of things, I believe this in no way obviates the idea that our universe, and perhaps others, are filled with life. Some of it, right now perhaps, looking in this direction.[/i] _________________ "The dull mind rises to Truth through that which is material." -Suger

Maybe "unmanned" probes are checking out Earth as we type.
I wonder how they would perceive us? Or if they even could?
Perhaps our landscape looks like a barren wasteland to their way of thinking. |
